First steps

The ODM gear needs materials found only in Paradis: Iron Bamboo and Ice Burst. Here is the shortest way from a new world to your first flight.

1. Get ready in the Overworld. Iron, leather, string, gunpowder, a blast furnace, and an anvil: the recipes use them a lot. Bring food and a bed (beds work in Paradis).

2. Go to Paradis through the docks on a beach: see Going to Paradis.

3. Watch out for Titans. Pure Titans roam the land outside the districts. Most sleep at night, but not all: the Abnormals never do. Stay near the walls and the districts at first: see Pure Titans.

4. Collect Iron Bamboo. It grows in patches on grass and moss, never in the Giant Forest or on the roads. You can plant it and use bone meal on it.

5. Find Ice Burst. Dig underground (below Y 0): Ice Burst Stone lines cave walls. Some of it is Bursting Ice Burst Stone. Shards grow around this block, up to an Ice Burst Shard Cluster. Break the cluster to get Ice Burst Clusters. Mine Bursting Ice Burst Stone with an iron pickaxe or better, then place it at home to farm it.

6. Build a Hardened Furnace and make Ultrahard Steel: see The ODM gear.

7. Craft the gear: an ODM Harness, the ODM Gear, two ODM Grips, blades, and a Gas Canister.

8. Fly. Put on the harness, put the gear in its slot, hold a grip in each hand, load your blades with R, and fire your hooks with G and H. Hold Space to boost.

Tip

Chests and barrels in the districts sometimes hold Ultrahard Steel Blades, Ice Burst Clusters, and syringes: worth a look before your first fight.
